Qatar Rail has won the Qatar Rail Award for Worldwide Operator of the Year at the Global Light Rail Awards 2026. The international recognition highlights the company’s operational efficiency, safety standards, customer experience and commitment to continuous improvement. Furthermore, the award acknowledges performance across the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks.
Chief Executive Officer Jassim Mohammed Al Ansari accepted the award alongside members of Qatar Rail’s senior management team. The ceremony took place in London, bringing together representatives from the international light rail and public transport industries. Consequently, the achievement places Qatar’s rail operator among the organizations recognized for their contributions to urban transportation.
The judging criteria highlighted several areas, including operational resilience, reliable services, passenger safety and innovation. In addition, the recognition reflects Qatar Rail’s focus on sustainability and improving the experience of people using its networks. These priorities remain central to the company’s efforts to maintain dependable transport services across Doha and Lusail.
Al Ansari said the award recognized the work of employees and partners who contribute to the networks’ performance. He added that the achievement reinforced the company’s commitment to safety, service quality and operational excellence. Moreover, he pointed to the progress of Qatar’s rail network as evidence of the teams’ continued efforts.
The chief executive also emphasized the responsibility that comes with international recognition. According to him, Qatar Rail intends to continue introducing innovations, improving passenger journeys and investing in national talent. Meanwhile, stronger partnerships will support the network’s development and contribute to the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030.
Chief of Service Delivery Ahmad Mohammed Al Saleh highlighted the role of technology and modern management practices. He said operational readiness and safety procedures help the company maintain services under different operating conditions. Additionally, effective asset management and customer service contribute to reliable journeys during ordinary operations and periods of increased demand.
Major sporting events have also tested the network’s ability to handle substantial passenger numbers. For example, Qatar Rail supported transport operations during the FIFA Arab Cup 2025 while maintaining service continuity and safety. This experience demonstrated the importance of operational planning, coordination and readiness during large public events.
The company reported average daily ridership of approximately 200,000 passengers during 2026. At the same time, it continued operating the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram while focusing on reliability and passenger service. These networks provide important connections between destinations and support public transport across Qatar’s urban areas.
The latest Qatar Rail Award follows two consecutive years of recognition in the same category. The company received Highly Commended distinctions in 2024 and 2025 before securing the main award in 2026. Therefore, this year’s result marks a further milestone in its record of international recognition.
The annual Global Light Rail Awards recognize achievements across light rail and public transport operations.
