Qatar Expands Smart Healthcare With Advanced Digital Labs

Qatar is stepping up the digital transformation of its healthcare sector by expanding the use of smart laboratory technologies, artificial intelligence and advanced genetic testing to improve patient care and diagnostic services.

The initiative, led by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), forms part of Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to build a modern healthcare system supported by innovation, digital technology and data-driven medical services.

HMC has introduced advanced digital laboratory systems that connect diagnostic equipment with electronic medical records, allowing test results to be delivered more quickly and securely. The corporation has also increased the use of artificial intelligence and data analytics to strengthen clinical decision-making and improve healthcare efficiency.

According to Dr. Enas Al-Kuwari, Head of the Department of Medical Laboratories and Pathology at HMC, the corporation performs more than 20 million laboratory tests each year, including around 153,000 genetic tests used to detect inherited disorders, blood cancers and other medical conditions.

She said the genetic diagnostic laboratory also supports Qatar’s premarital and newborn screening programmes, helping identify health conditions at an early stage.

As part of its precision medicine strategy, HMC has introduced whole-exome sequencing into its laboratory network for the first time, alongside pharmacogenetic testing and advanced diagnostics for blood clotting disorders. These technologies allow doctors to provide more accurate diagnoses and tailor treatments to individual patients.

The healthcare provider has also strengthened its blood transfusion services by achieving self-sufficiency in blood supplies through continued donor participation. It has introduced long-term cryopreservation technology for rare blood types and expanded advanced testing to support organ transplant programmes and reduce the risk of organ rejection.

HMC has further enhanced laboratory services with new diagnostic tests for cardiovascular disease, respiratory viruses and other medical conditions while expanding stem cell transplant services for adult cancer patients.

Dr. Al-Kuwari said the continued development of smart laboratory services reflects Qatar’s commitment to innovation and scientific research, supporting a healthcare system that delivers faster diagnoses, improved patient safety and higher-quality medical care.
