Iraq Opens New Gas Storage Facility In Najaf

Iraq has launched trial operations at a new liquefied gas storage facility in Najaf as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure and improve the reliability of gas supplies.

The Ministry of Oil said the new depot has a storage capacity of 3,000 cubic metres and forms part of a wider strategy to expand the country’s gas production and storage capabilities.

Undersecretary for Gas Affairs Ezzat Saber said the project supports the development of Iraq’s liquefied gas transportation, storage and distribution network while increasing the country’s strategic reserve capacity.

He described the start of trial operations as an important step towards improving the flexibility of the national supply system and ensuring the availability of liquefied gas for central provinces and other parts of the country.

The ministry said the facility will receive liquefied gas through pipeline networks rather than tanker trucks, a move expected to improve operational safety and enhance the stability of gas supplies.

The project is part of Iraq’s broader efforts to modernise its energy infrastructure and meet growing domestic demand for liquefied gas.
