The fourth edition of the Zakho Şal û Şepik Festival has opened in the city of Zakho in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, bringing together cultural figures, designers and researchers to celebrate Kurdish heritage and traditional dress.
The opening ceremony was attended by President Masoud Barzani, alongside officials and guests from across the region. The two-day event focuses on the Şal û Şepik, a traditional Kurdish outfit, and its role in preserving cultural identity.
The festival features a series of panels, exhibitions and artistic performances aimed at promoting Kurdish fashion and heritage. Organisers say the programme also seeks to document traditional clothing and introduce it to younger generations.
The first day included cultural discussions with heritage experts and researchers, followed by an evening ceremony featuring speeches, local tours and folk performances from various regional and international groups.
On the second day, the programme continues with further cultural sessions, fashion showcases and musical performances, ending with a concert by Kurdish singer Hozan Dino.
The festival has become a growing cultural platform in Zakho, highlighting both local traditions and wider regional artistic exchange.
