Saudi Ports See 21% Surge in Container Handling, Boosting Logistics Sector

Saudi Arabia’s container handling soared in February, marking a strong boost for the Kingdom’s ports and logistics sector. According to the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), container handling reached 667,882 TEUs, representing a 20.89% year-on-year increase. This rise demonstrates the Kingdom’s growing position as a regional logistics hub.

Moreover, transshipment containers climbed 28.09% annually, totaling 155,325 TEUs. Officials highlighted that incoming containers increased by 26.18%, reaching 272,210 TEUs, while outgoing containers rose 11.54%, totaling 240,347 TEUs. These figures indicate strong trade flows through Saudi ports and the efficiency of their operations.

The increase in container handling aligns with the National Logistics Strategy, which aims to raise the sector’s contribution to GDP from 6% to 10% by 2030. In this regard, experts noted that robust port operations support trade, supply chains, and economic diversification.

Vehicle imports and maritime traffic also showed growth. The number of vehicles arriving at ports climbed 17.69% to 92,369, while maritime traffic increased 13.06% to 1,385 ships. Additionally, ports received 837,548 head of livestock, up 19.99% from last year. Meanwhile, passenger traffic declined slightly by 6.82%, totaling 86,567 travelers.

In terms of cargo, the total tonnage handled rose 9.22% to 18.15 million tonnes. This included 880,377 tonnes of general cargo, 13.40 million tonnes of liquid bulk, and 3.86 million tonnes of solid bulk. The rise in container handling contributed to supply chain stability, supported related industries, and enhanced food security.

Analysts also highlighted that increasing container handling benefits tourism, maritime activities, and supporting services. They emphasized that efficient ports reinforce Saudi Arabia’s reputation as a global logistics gateway spanning three continents.

Earlier in January, Saudi ports handled 738,111 TEUs, marking a 2.01% increase year-on-year. Transshipment containers recorded a 22.44% rise, totaling 184,019 TEUs. The consistent growth demonstrates the sector’s resilience and strategic importance.

Overall, the container handling surge in February confirms Saudi Arabia’s commitment to strengthening logistics infrastructure and expanding its influence in global maritime trade. The Kingdom’s ports remain crucial for regional trade, economic development, and strategic connectivity.
