Oman is expanding its environmental sustainability agenda through two major initiatives focused on afforestation and ecosystem management, reinforcing long-term green development goals across the country.
Environmental activities in North Al Batinah and Dhofar highlight coordinated national efforts led by the Environment Authority to strengthen natural resource protection and increase vegetation cover in Oman.
In North Al Batinah Governorate, an awareness event was held in the Wilayat of A’Suwayq to promote the “Plant Oman 2050” initiative. The programme aims to expand green spaces and encourage community participation in afforestation.
The event, organised by the local Environment Center, brought together government bodies, educational institutions, private sector representatives, and civil society organisations. Officials said the initiative builds on earlier national efforts to plant millions of trees and supports broader sustainability targets linked to long-term development strategies.
Activities included an environmental exhibition featuring more than 20 participants showcasing agricultural projects, nursery development, and environmental education programmes. Native Omani tree species were highlighted, and seedlings were distributed to institutions and community members to encourage wider participation in planting efforts.
In parallel, a separate meeting in Dhofar Governorate focused on ecosystem management under the “Pasture Restoration Project.” Held in the Wilayat of Rakhyut in Dhofar Governorate, the session discussed strategies to improve natural resource management and restore grazing lands.
The meeting gathered local officials, including representatives from Rakhyut and Dhalkut, members of the Shura and Municipal Councils, tribal leaders, and community figures. An international delegation from the Global Green Growth Institute also took part.
Participants emphasized the need for coordinated action between institutions and local communities to ensure sustainable environmental management. The initiative aims to develop a structured roadmap aligned with green growth strategies and national sustainability objectives.
Officials noted that combining afforestation efforts with ecosystem restoration projects reflects a broader national commitment to environmental protection and long-term ecological balance. Dhofar, in particular, is seen as a key region for implementing sustainable land and resource management practices.
