Deadly Flash Floods in Sulaimani Claim Lives and Cause Widespread Damage

Severe weather hit the Kurdistan Region, with flash floods in Sulaimani killing three people and injuring four others. Authorities also report that two children remain missing, prompting urgent search operations. These floods follow warnings from the region’s meteorology directorate, which predicted heavy rainstorms and rising water levels.

The Civil Defense Directorate confirmed that the first two victims were residents of Chamchamal district. Officials identified them as a 72-year-old man and a 22-year-old adult. In northern Kirkuk, a young girl also drowned, increasing the death toll. Local residents reported that the missing children are nine and eleven years old, intensifying rescue efforts.

Rudaw reporters on the ground documented extensive flooding in Chamchamal and the northern town of Piramagrun. Traffic authorities temporarily closed the western Sulaimani-Tasluja road and other routes due to stormwater runoff. These closures aimed to protect residents and prevent further accidents.

Officials emphasized that flash floods in Sulaimani caused significant damage to homes, vehicles, and infrastructure. Emergency teams remain deployed throughout the region to support affected communities. Additionally, municipal workers in Kirkuk are clearing drainage channels to avoid further blockages in streets and residential areas.

Regional leaders coordinated with local mayors to ensure residents’ safety and protect property. They also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. Furthermore, civil defense teams across the region remain on high alert, ready to provide immediate assistance where needed.

Authorities reminded residents that this year’s drought and low dam reserves have worsened the impact of sudden heavy rainfall. Limited water access has already forced some residents in Sulaimani and Duhok to leave villages temporarily. Emergency projects in Erbil and Sulaimani aim to improve access to potable water and mitigate future risks.

The Kurdistan Region Meteorology Directorate advised other provinces, including Halabja, Soran, Raparin, and Garmiyan, to prepare for severe rainfall until conditions ease. Officials continue monitoring weather patterns closely to prevent additional casualties.

Overall, flash floods in Sulaimani highlight the urgent need for preparedness and strong emergency response. Authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing that rapid action and community cooperation are crucial in mitigating the devastating effects of sudden floods.
