Bolsonaro Departure from Brazil has drawn scrutiny after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied direct American involvement in the arrangements. Rubio made the comments on Saturday during a press conference in Atlanta, Georgia. He said Washington did not organise the journey, although President Donald Trump approved Bolsonaro’s entry into the United States.
Flavio Bolsonaro, who lost Brazil’s presidential run-off election, arrived in the United States with his family on Wednesday. His departure followed a court order requiring authorities to seize his passports amid several ongoing investigations. The circumstances surrounding his journey have since attracted questions about the arrangements and possible assistance.
Rubio explained that Bolsonaro already held a valid visa before travelling. He added that Trump personally decided to allow him entry into the country. However, Rubio distinguished that decision from the arrangements Bolsonaro made to leave Brazil.
According to the secretary of state, the US government played no direct role in organising his departure. Nevertheless, reports about the aircraft and its possible charter arrangements have raised further questions. The flight reportedly travelled through Argentina and Ecuador before reaching the United States.
Some media reports identified Jason Miller, an adviser to Trump, as the person who chartered the aircraft. However, the airline’s head told AFP that an intermediary paid for the journey using a US bank account. The White House has not publicly commented on the reported flight arrangements.
Meanwhile, Trump expressed sympathy for Bolsonaro during remarks to reporters at his Florida residence on Saturday. He criticised the treatment Bolsonaro had received and said he could remain in America indefinitely. Trump also described Brazil’s election as disgraceful, although he said he had no plans to meet Bolsonaro.
The president’s comments followed Bolsonaro’s arrival and renewed claims about his political position. Since reaching the United States, Bolsonaro has described himself as Brazil’s legitimate leader. He also claimed that persecution forced him to leave his country.
The developments have also prompted diplomatic questions involving Argentina. A Brazilian diplomatic source said Argentina’s representative had received a summons for a routine meeting. The source said Brazilian officials wanted explanations concerning the flight and its arrangements.
However, Argentina’s foreign minister later denied that Brazil had asked Buenos Aires to explain its involvement. This disagreement leaves differing accounts about whether Brazilian officials formally raised the matter. Neither account provided further public details about the discussions.
Bolsonaro’s departure comes amid a wider political controversy involving his family. His father, former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest. Authorities convicted him over a plot to stage a coup following his 2022 election defeat.
The Bolsonaro Departure has therefore raised questions about travel arrangements, political support and diplomatic contacts. Rubio’s statement addressed the US government’s direct role, while leaving other details unresolved. Meanwhile, Trump’s remarks confirmed that his administration had approved Bolsonaro’s entry and would allow him to stay.
