Bahrain’s cultural community has paid tribute to the late poet Ali Abdullah Khalifa during a memorial gathering that celebrated his literary achievements and enduring contribution to the Kingdom’s cultural life.
The event, organised by the Abdulrahman Kanoo Cultural Center, brought together writers, artists, academics, students and admirers to reflect on Khalifa’s influence as one of Bahrain’s most prominent literary figures.
Participants described the late poet as a national cultural icon whose work and personal values left a lasting mark on generations of writers and intellectuals. Many recalled his generosity in sharing knowledge, his commitment to culture and his role as a mentor to young creatives.
Huda Al-Alawi, Director of the Culture Department at the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, remembered Khalifa as an authentic cultural voice who believed that literature and knowledge play a vital role in building society. She also spoke of a painting inspired by one of his poems that she created to mark Mother’s Day, saying it remains a cherished reminder of his legacy.
The poet’s brother, musician Khalid Abdullah Khalifa, thanked the organisers for hosting the memorial, describing it as a fitting tribute that allowed family, friends and members of Bahrain’s cultural community to celebrate his life and achievements.
Dr. Masouma Al-Mutawa, Secretary-General of the Abdulrahman Kanoo Cultural Center, said the event was one of the most emotional programmes the centre had organised. She described Khalifa as a humble figure who remained dedicated to supporting others throughout his life despite holding many public positions.
She said Bahrain had lost more than a celebrated poet, describing him as a symbol of the country’s cultural identity whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
Dr. Rashid Najm, head of the Bahrain Writers and Authors Association, also paid tribute to Khalifa, calling him one of the pillars of Bahrain’s literary movement and pledging to preserve and promote the cultural legacy he left behind.
The gathering reflected the high regard in which Ali Abdullah Khalifa is held across Bahrain’s literary and cultural circles, highlighting the lasting impact of his work on the Kingdom’s artistic and intellectual landscape.
