Riyadh Falcon Auction Showcases Expert Selection Criteria for Breeders

International breeders and falconry enthusiasts gathered in Malham for the prestigious annual Riyadh falcon auction event this week. Organized by the National Center for Falcons, the venue showcases elite birds alongside traditional hunting culture. British falconer Jeff Armstrong explained that specific physical traits determine bird selection for active field hunting versus breeding. Consequently, the specialized Riyadh falcon auction provides an essential global platform for exchanging professional breeding expertise.

Armstrong shared that his passion for falconry began during childhood before eventually founding his commercial farm fifteen years ago. Furthermore, he noted that peregrine falcons and gyr-peregrine hybrids remain his primary personal choices for hunting expeditions. When selecting hunting falcons, he prioritizes individual bird build and hunting suitability rather than overall physical size. Therefore, experienced falconers look for distinct performance characteristics suited to specific environments and hunting styles.

Conversely, physical size becomes a much higher priority when selecting birds for long-term farm breeding programs. Armstrong utilizes his deep knowledge of established British bloodlines to acquire larger falcons for selective breeding goals. Additionally, international breeders analyze genetic lineage and physical symmetry to enhance future generations of hunting falcons. Thus, professional selection methodologies vary significantly depending on whether birds serve field hunting or breeding purposes.

The ongoing event continues attracting international participants, commercial buyers, and passionate falconry enthusiasts until August 25. Furthermore, the event plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural falconry heritage. By connecting global breeders, the venue facilitates international commercial trade and celebrates traditional Arabian heritage skills. Ultimately, the successful Riyadh falcon auction reinforces Saudi Arabia’s standing as a premier international hub for falconry.
