Doha – The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has launched an awareness campaign as part of World Glaucoma Week, observed from March 9 to 15, under the theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World.”
The initiative aims to educate the public about glaucoma. This chronic eye disease gradually damages the optic nerve, leading to vision loss if left untreated. The campaign emphasizes early detection. It is the most crucial step in preventing blindness caused by the disease.
Dr. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani, Director of the Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention Programmes Department, highlighted the importance of regular eye check-ups. These are especially crucial for individuals over 40 or with a family history of glaucoma.
Studies indicate that glaucoma is the third leading cause of blindness in Qatar, following diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. The MoPH continues its efforts in early screening, prevention, and collaboration with health institutions to reduce its impact.
