Strategic Partnership Drives Kuwait and Türkiye Cooperation

Kuwait and Türkiye plan to deepen their Strategic Partnership by expanding cooperation across several important sectors. Turkish Ambassador-designate to Kuwait Can Oğuz outlined the priorities during a reception in Kuwait City. The event marked the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye.

Oğuz said both countries want to strengthen cooperation in defence, healthcare, tourism, agriculture and trade. He described the upgrade of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership as an important development. Moreover, he said historic visits by both countries’ leaders helped advance that relationship.

Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah visited Türkiye in May 2024. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan later travelled to Kuwait in October 2025. According to Oğuz, these visits provided important momentum for closer diplomatic and economic engagement.

The ambassador-designate identified three main foundations supporting relations between the countries. First, he highlighted the friendship and mutual trust shared by their leaders. Second, he pointed to institutional cooperation through the Strategic Dialogue Mechanism. Finally, he emphasised the longstanding connections between Kuwaiti and Turkish communities.

Defence Cooperation

Oğuz also highlighted defence ties as an important part of the relationship. He said Kuwait’s purchase of Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles opened another chapter in military cooperation. The acquisition, he added, demonstrated the potential for further collaboration between the two countries.

Furthermore, Oğuz reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for Kuwait amid regional security challenges. He recalled Ankara’s condemnation of attacks targeting Kuwait and its support for the country’s security. He also described Türkiye’s foreign policy as independent and multidimensional under President Erdogan’s leadership.

According to Oğuz, Türkiye seeks to contribute to peace and stability internationally. He linked this approach to the country’s broader diplomatic and security priorities. However, he did not announce any new defence agreements during the reception.

Trade and Investment Opportunities

Economic cooperation also featured prominently in the ambassador-designate’s remarks. Oğuz highlighted the role of Turkish companies in supporting Kuwait’s development projects. Meanwhile, he noted growing interest among Kuwaiti investors in opportunities across Türkiye.

One prominent example involves the construction of Terminal 2 at Kuwait International Airport. Turkish contractor Limak continues to work on the major infrastructure project. Oğuz said the development would improve connectivity and strengthen Kuwait’s position as an aviation hub.

He also pointed to opportunities for businesses and investors in both countries. Cooperation across trade, tourism, agriculture and healthcare could create additional areas for commercial engagement. Consequently, stronger institutional ties may help companies explore partnerships and investment opportunities.

Shared Values and Future Relations

During his address, Oğuz paid tribute to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Türkiye. He also honoured Atatürk’s fellow soldiers and their contribution to the country’s establishment. The ambassador-designate reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

He referenced Atatürk’s principle, “Peace at home, peace in the world,” as a continuing guide. Oğuz described the principle as an important foundation of Türkiye’s international outlook. He also expressed confidence in continued progress between Kuwait and Türkiye.

Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs Dr Amthal Hadi Al-Huwailah attended the reception as guest of honour. Senior Kuwaiti officials, diplomats, business representatives and members of the Turkish community also joined the celebration.

Oğuz concluded by expressing optimism about the future of bilateral relations. He said both countries would continue working towards a stronger and more prosperous future. Their Strategic Partnership remains focused on expanding cooperation while supporting shared regional and international interests.
