Iraq Security Forces Seize Attack Drones Amid Rising Threats

Iraq security forces intercept drones in a central region, highlighting growing concerns over attacks targeting key facilities. The drone threat has escalated since the US-Israel-Iran war began on February 28, 2026. Authorities stress that drone threats remain a serious risk to civilian and diplomatic areas.

In central Iraq’s Babil province, security forces discovered drones near the Technical Institute in the Al-Jilawiyeen district. Officials confirmed the drones were prepared to strike the Diplomatic Support Center at Baghdad International Airport. This center serves as a critical logistics hub for US diplomats.

Earlier this month, a drone attack targeted the same facility. Security forces successfully intercepted five out of six drones, while one drone struck near a guard tower. Officials instructed personnel at the site to take shelter immediately. Authorities warned that drone threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated and can severely disrupt operations if no one monitors them.

Security sources attribute the attacks to militias aligned with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an Iranian-backed coalition. These groups have intensified operations since the US and Israel launched military action against Iran. Analysts warn that the use of drone threats could increase in future conflicts, potentially targeting military, diplomatic, and civilian sites.

Officials emphasized that local security forces are strengthening monitoring systems, coordinating with international partners, and deploying rapid response units to counter the drone risk. They also highlighted improvements in surveillance technology to detect and neutralize threats before they can strike.

Baghdad International Airport and surrounding areas remain on high alert. Authorities continue to conduct regular inspections, while intelligence agencies track drone activity across the country. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious aerial objects to security agencies.

These proactive measures aim to prevent attacks that could compromise regional stability. Experts suggest that public awareness and enhanced security infrastructure are critical in countering evolving drone tactics in Iraq.

With tensions across the Gulf and Middle East continuing, Iraqi security forces’ quick action demonstrates their commitment to protecting diplomatic missions and civilians from emerging aerial threats.
