UAE Trade Agreements with Malaysia and Australia Boost Global Commerce and Economic Growth

The UAE trade agreements with Malaysia and Australia officially came into effect, marking a new chapter in global commerce. These agreements aim to expand trade, strengthen economic ties, and foster strategic partnerships across multiple sectors.

The UAE-Malaysia economic partnership focuses on boosting bilateral trade to USD 13.5 billion by 2032. It streamlines customs procedures, reduces tariffs, and encourages private sector collaboration. Importantly, this is Malaysia’s first trade pact with a Gulf state. The agreement covers goods, services, investment, and the Islamic economy. It also supports joint growth in healthcare, renewable energy, AI, logistics, and sustainable development.

Moreover, Malaysia and the UAE have signed additional memorandums of understanding on maritime and food security. For example, they plan to develop a multipurpose terminal at Bagan Datuk Port to serve as a food export hub for China, ASEAN, and the GCC.

Meanwhile, the UAE-Australia trade agreement also took effect. It aims to increase annual trade from USD 4.2 billion in 2024 to over USD 10 billion by 2032. The pact reduces tariffs, eases market access, and promotes investment in renewable energy, food security, infrastructure, and technology. This represents Australia’s first trade deal with a MENA country.

These agreements are part of the UAE’s broader CEPA program, which aims to push foreign trade to USD 1 trillion by 2031. Non-oil foreign trade already rose 24% year-on-year to nearly AED 1.7 trillion in the first half of 2025. Moreover, trade contributed 15.6% of non-oil GDP in Q1 2025, putting the sector on track to hit AED 4 trillion by 2027 — four years ahead of schedule.

The UAE trade agreements illustrate the country’s commitment to global commerce and economic diversification. They also demonstrate strategic foresight in creating strong partnerships and enhancing regional connectivity. As trade continues to grow, the agreements are expected to deliver significant benefits for businesses, investors, and governments alike.
