U.S. Embassy Issues Urgent Warning for Americans in Iraq

The United States Embassy in Baghdad issued an urgent security alert on Saturday, instructing all American citizens to depart Iraq immediately. This significant warning follows a surge in violent attacks by Iran-backed militias across the country. The embassy specifically cited the activities of these groups as the primary reason for the elevated threat level. These militias have reportedly targeted areas frequented by Americans and coalition forces. The advisory covers the entire nation, including the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. This represents one of the most serious public warnings from the U.S. mission in recent years.

The embassy’s statement pointed directly to the perpetrators of the recent violence. It described them as Iran-aligned terrorist militias carrying out indiscriminate attacks. These groups have encouraged and executed strikes on U.S. citizens and associated targets. The advisory noted that assaults have occurred across Iraq consistently. The Kurdistan Region has also experienced these significant security threats. Therefore, the message from the diplomatic mission left no room for ambiguity. It strongly urged all private US citizens to leave the country now.

This urgent travel warning follows a specific pattern of escalating violence. The embassy highlighted repeated attacks on the heavily fortified International Zone in Baghdad. This area, also known as the Green Zone, houses critical government buildings and foreign embassies. Militants have also targeted the vicinity of Erbil International Airport. Additionally, the area around the U.S. Consulate in Erbil has faced similar threats. Consequently, the embassy instructed citizens not to attempt reaching their facilities. They cited the ongoing risk from missiles and drones in Iraqi airspace.

Reports emerged shortly before the embassy’s announcement of a fresh attack. According to Iraqi security sources, a missile strike targeted the U.S. embassy compound. The attack reportedly caused smoke to rise from within the embassy building itself. Details regarding potential damage or casualties remain unconfirmed at this time. Therefore, social media users circulated videos showing a fire on the building’s roof. The footage appeared to show flames near the embassy’s defense systems. This incident dramatically underscored the urgency of the subsequent US warning.

This latest embassy attack followed another significant strike earlier that morning. A dawn missile hit a house belonging to Kata’ib Hezbollah in Baghdad. Kata’ib Hezbollah is a powerful Iraqi armed group with strong ties to Iran. A security source confirmed the strike killed one person and wounded two others. Furthermore, the source indicated the deceased was a key figure within the organization. The attack on the militia house and then the embassy compound marks a dangerous escalation. These events create a highly volatile and unpredictable security environment for everyone.

The broader regional context involves ongoing conflict between Iran and US-led forces. The US-Israeli campaign against Iranian targets recently entered its fifteenth day. This operation aims to dismantle what it describes as Iran’s security structure. CENTCOM reported striking approximately six thousand targets across Iran since late February. In response, Iran launched a massive barrage of drones and missiles last week. They claimed these attacks targeted US and Israeli positions throughout the region. This cycle of retaliation directly involves armed groups operating from Iraqi soil.

One group, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, claimed responsibility for most recent strikes. They stated they carried out twenty-seven operations over the past day alone. These operations utilized dozens of drones and missiles against enemy bases. This figure represents a notable increase from their previous daily totals. Just two days prior, they reported only thirteen attacks in a single day. This sharp escalation signals a potentially dangerous new phase in the conflict. For American citizens still in Iraq, the window for safe departure is closing rapidly. The embassy’s warning reflects a stark reality of diminished security across the nation.
