Saudi Arabia Condemns Drone Attack on UAE Consulate in Erbil

Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the UAE consulate drone attack in Erbil. The Kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing that targeting diplomatic missions violates international law. Saudi authorities stated that attacks on embassies and consulates undermine global norms and threaten diplomatic safety. By condemning the strike, Saudi Arabia affirmed solidarity with the United Arab Emirates and called for accountability.

The attack struck the UAE Consulate General in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Authorities reported material damage but no injuries. Officials from Baghdad and Erbil have been urged to investigate thoroughly, identify the perpetrators, and take appropriate measures. The incident highlights the ongoing risks that diplomatic missions face in conflict zones.

The Saudi statement also stressed that repeated attacks on diplomatic premises clearly violate international conventions, including the Geneva Conventions. Riyadh called on all parties to respect the inviolability of diplomatic buildings. Jordan also condemned the strike, reiterating its full support for the UAE. Both countries emphasized the importance of upholding international law and protecting foreign missions.

The UAE consulate attack occurred amid escalating regional tensions. Over ten days, attackers targeted the Kurdistan Region with more than 200 drones and missiles in the wider US-Israel-Iran conflict. Iranian-backed groups and militias operating in Iraq claimed responsibility for many of these attacks. The UAE incident marked the first time a consulate other than the US mission faced a strike since the conflict began.

Coalition forces intercepted and destroyed three explosive-laden drones over Erbil. Debris from one drone fell near the UAE Consulate but caused no casualties. Authorities continue to monitor airspace and have increased protective measures for diplomatic facilities. Saudi Arabia emphasized that such preventive steps remain crucial to protect lives and uphold sovereignty.

The Kurdistan Region’s Department of Foreign Relations also criticized the attack. Officials called on Baghdad to prevent extremist groups from continuously targeting the region, stressing the Iraqi government’s responsibility to safeguard sovereignty and protect residents from repeated assaults.

Overall, Saudi Arabia and its regional partners remain united in condemning attacks on diplomatic missions. Authorities urge stronger security measures and accountability to prevent further incidents. The UAE consulate attack serves as a reminder that protecting diplomatic premises is essential for maintaining international order and regional stability.
