South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit the United Arab Emirates on January 12-13, highlighting UAE-South Africa collaboration. The visit coincides with Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, a major global forum running from January 11-15. The summit, themed “Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,” brings together leaders, industry experts, and civil-society representatives to address global sustainability challenges.
During the visit, Ramaphosa will participate in the summit’s high-level segment and several leadership dialogues. He will meet top business leaders and captains of industry to promote investment and strengthen UAE-South Africa collaboration in emerging sectors.
The UAE remains one of South Africa’s most significant partners in the Middle East. Key ties include transport, logistics, and renewable energy. Bilateral trade reached $5.22 billion in 2024. South Africa exported $2.68 billion, a 5.53 percent increase from the previous year. Imports from the UAE fell to $2.96 billion, reducing the trade deficit to $284 million.
This visit aims to expand economic momentum and explore new opportunities for UAE-South Africa collaboration in sustainability and green industrialisation. Officials expect discussions to focus on renewable energy projects, climate-resilient infrastructure, and innovative industrial solutions.
Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week offers a platform for leaders to share experiences, identify investment opportunities, and build long-term partnerships. It highlights large-scale solutions to global sustainability challenges while encouraging cross-border collaboration.
Moreover, Ramaphosa’s engagements will include high-level meetings, panel discussions, and bilateral talks with UAE officials and business executives. These sessions aim to identify concrete initiatives for joint investment, technology exchange, and industrial development.
Both countries have expressed interest in further deepening ties in energy transition, green technology, and climate-resilient infrastructure. Analysts note that increased collaboration could open doors for joint ventures and expand trade between the Middle East and Africa.
By leveraging shared expertise and investment potential, South Africa and the UAE aim to create sustainable growth, strengthen bilateral relations, and position themselves as leaders in regional sustainability initiatives.
Overall, the visit demonstrates the growing significance of UAE-South Africa collaboration, showing how political engagement and economic partnerships can align with global sustainability goals.
