In today’s era of globalization, building and maintaining robust diplomatic relations is crucial for the development of any nation. In this context, showcasing a country’s rich culture on the global stage is increasingly important. This helps in protecting national interests and strengthening its international reputation. For Uzbekistan, fostering cultural diplomacy has become a key component of its foreign policy. Its relationship with the State of Kuwait is a prime example of this effort.
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties on July 8, 1994, the cultural cooperation between Uzbekistan and Kuwait has flourished. Both nations have worked to deepen their relations through a variety of cultural events, exhibitions, scientific conferences, and festivals. These efforts aim at strengthening mutual understanding and promoting cultural exchange. Permanent dialogue between cultural institutions in both countries has also been established. This ensures the continuous growth of this relationship.
Several notable collaborative efforts include:
- Uzbekistan Culture Days in Kuwait (2017): From December 15 to 22, the “Uzbekistan Culture Days” were celebrated in Kuwait City. An exhibition dedicated to Uzbekistan was held at the “Al-Adwaniya” gallery, along with performances showcasing the country’s art and culture.
- International Cultural Engagement: Kuwaiti representatives have actively participated in several important cultural forums hosted by Uzbekistan. These include the “Central Asia at the Crossroads of World Civilizations” forum in Khiva (2021), the “Lazgi” International Dance Festival (2022 and 2024), and the International Bakhshi Art Festival (2023).
- Creative Collaborations: In February 2024, a creative group from the Uzbekistan State Conservatory toured Kuwait. This further promoted cultural exchange. Similarly, in August 2024, renowned Kuwaiti journalist Abdulkarim Al-Hindal Al-Hashimi attended the “Sharq Taronalari” International Music Festival in Samarkand. He shared highlights of Uzbekistan’s culture and heritage with his extensive social media following.
Plans are underway to host “Uzbekistan Culture Days” in Kuwait in 2025. This will include showcasing Uzbek culture and art more prominently to the Kuwaiti public. Additionally, discussions are ongoing to develop joint educational programs and cultural tourism initiatives between the two countries.
The future of cultural diplomacy between Uzbekistan and Kuwait looks promising. Both countries are looking to expand their collaboration in preserving and promoting national cultures, developing cultural tourism, and fostering new partnerships. Important agreements are expected to further solidify the cultural ties between the two nations, strengthening mutual understanding and fostering lasting friendship.
It is my belief that these cultural exchanges will continue to thrive. They will build stronger ties and showcase the shared values of the people of Uzbekistan and Kuwait.
