Oman Shura Council to Review Tax and Welfare Bills

The Oman’s Shura Council is set to convene its 22nd regular session on Monday, with lawmakers expected to review a draft tax agreement with Azerbaijan and debate new legislation aimed at protecting financially vulnerable households.

According to the Council’s agenda, members will discuss a proposed agreement between Oman and Azerbaijan to eliminate double taxation on income and prevent tax evasion, as part of efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.

The session will also consider a draft law submitted by the Shura Council that seeks to prohibit the disconnection of essential utility services for financially distressed families, unemployed individuals and humanitarian cases. The proposal aims to establish a legal framework that balances consumer protection with the responsibilities of service providers.

Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council, said the Council continues to carry out its legislative responsibilities by reviewing draft laws, agreements and proposals referred to it, contributing to the development of Oman’s legal framework and public policy.

He noted that the Council has held more than 20 regular sessions during the current parliamentary term, reflecting continued legislative activity across a range of economic, social and development issues.

In addition to the draft legislation, lawmakers are expected to review reports from the Council’s standing committees covering a range of development, economic and public service matters.

The meeting forms part of the Council’s ongoing role in shaping legislation and supporting national priorities under Oman’s governance framework.
