Baghdad Green District to Rise with One Million Trees

Baghdad is preparing for an ambitious urban project named Baghdad Green District, which promises to reshape the city. The large-scale development will cover 10 million square metres in the southern Al Rasheed area. The centerpiece of this plan is the planting of more than one million trees. From the beginning, leaders described Baghdad Green District as a vision for sustainability and urban renewal.

The new district will rise on the former Al Rasheed military camp west of the Tigris River. Authorities and developers want to replace a site of conflict with a center of growth. The green transformation aims to merge ecological balance with modern living spaces. The symbolic shift highlights how Baghdad Green District represents a future rooted in both progress and nature.

Planners revealed that the development will include vast public parks and shaded walkways. Retail zones will connect neighborhoods with vibrant shops and markets. Modern high-rises will dominate the skyline, and a landmark tower could reach 260 metres. The design also promises cycling lanes, recreational areas, and open plazas. Every detail points to a district built for both community and sustainability.

Gensler, a global architecture firm, designed the masterplan in collaboration with Iraqi developer Emkanat. Their design ensures that the trees will absorb about 22,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. This climate benefit could ease environmental pressures on Baghdad, where air quality remains a major concern.

Developers stress that Emkanat has evolved from smaller projects into major urban regeneration initiatives. Over the years, the company expanded its vision beyond villas and commercial sites. Today, it works closely with international experts and national authorities to build transformative projects. By aligning ecological restoration with modern infrastructure, Emkanat positions Baghdad Green District as a model for the region.

Moreover, officials emphasize that the project will boost the economy while creating jobs. Construction and maintenance of the district will require thousands of workers. Retail, tourism, and housing demand will also generate new opportunities. As a result, Baghdad Green District could stimulate both local prosperity and global recognition.

In the end, the plan is more than just urban development. It is about rewriting the future of Baghdad with nature at its core. With one million trees, a new skyline, and sustainable infrastructure, the district will stand as a living symbol of resilience. Baghdad Green District is not only a project, it is a promise of renewal.
