Iraq and Russia Strengthen Security Ties Amid Regional Turmoil

Iraq and Russia security cooperation was the main topic when Iraq’s National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji met Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu and his team in Baghdad. Both sides focused on building stronger ties and improving security in the region. Iraq-Russia security cooperation was central in all discussions.

The meeting covered many areas. Officials shared knowledge and agreed on ways to exchange information. They discussed border security, cybersecurity, fighting terrorism, and stopping drug trafficking. These steps show how Iraq-Russia security cooperation can work in practice to face real threats.

This visit also prepares for a meeting between Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the upcoming Arab summit in Moscow. Al-Sudani will lead the summit. Leaders hope to turn talks into real actions in defense and intelligence work.

Both sides also talked about regional problems. They discussed ending the war in Gaza through diplomacy. They stressed helping Palestinians and finding peaceful solutions. Iraq-Russia security cooperation also plays a role in these wider efforts.

The officials said it is important to keep talking about regional security. Iraq’s role as a mediator makes this cooperation even more valuable. Both countries agreed to work together against threats, cyber attacks, and terrorism.

Experts note that this meeting shows Iraq’s active approach in foreign relations. By working closely with Russia, Iraq strengthens its security and influence in the region. The talks also send a message to neighbors that Iraq is taking steps to keep the region safe.

The meeting ended with promises to keep cooperating. Future plans include joint training, sharing technology, and exchanging intelligence. This cooperation will continue to guide both countries’ strategies and actions.
