UTAS Launches Coastal Sustainability Camping Program in Oman

The UTAS Rovers Camping program has begun in Oman, bringing together student leaders for an environmental and leadership-focused initiative at Al Sawadi Beach Resort. The 17th edition of the event runs from May 1 to May 4 under the theme “Seifa… Towards Sustainable Shores.”

The program is organized by the Rustaq College of Education under the University of Technology and Applied Sciences. It gathers more than 60 female participants alongside supervisors and scouting leaders from different branches. The initiative combines field training, environmental education, and leadership development activities.

The UTAS Rovers Camping program focuses on strengthening teamwork and communication among participants. It also aims to build leadership skills and encourage community service values. Organizers designed the activities to connect scouting traditions with modern sustainability goals.

The theme “Seifa… Towards Sustainable Shores” highlights Oman’s coastal identity. It also reflects the close relationship between communities and the sea. Organizers emphasized the importance of protecting marine environments and promoting responsible use of natural resources.

Participants take part in several structured activities during the camp. These include a coastal environmental expedition at Al Sawadi Beach. The activity helps students observe ecological challenges and understand sustainable coastal management practices.

Training sessions also cover environmental topics such as coastal sustainability opportunities and challenges. Specialists from the Environment Directorate of South Al Batinah lead these discussions. Students also join interactive workshops focused on analyzing community needs.

The UTAS Rovers Camping program includes an innovation lab. In this space, participants design projects aimed at solving environmental issues. Teams develop ideas focused on coastal protection and sustainability. They later present and evaluate their projects with guidance from supervisors.

Officials from the university highlighted the importance of integrating education with practical experience. They said the camp strengthens student leadership while promoting environmental awareness. The program also encourages innovation in addressing real-world challenges.

The UTAS Rovers Camping program further supports national development goals in Oman, especially those linked to sustainability under Oman Vision 2040. Organizers believe youth participation plays a key role in protecting natural resources and building environmental responsibility.

The event also receives support from the Directorate General of Scouts and Guides and Student Activities. Additional cooperation comes from environmental authorities and scouting organizations. This partnership helps expand the impact of the program across different educational branches.

The camp aims to produce practical student-led initiatives that can be implemented beyond the event. Organizers also encourage documentation and sharing of successful projects across campuses. They believe this approach strengthens long-term learning and collaboration.

Through the UTAS Rovers Camping program, students gain both leadership experience and environmental knowledge. The initiative continues to position young people as active contributors to sustainability efforts and community development in Oman.
