US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is travelling to Doha, according to US media reports, as uncertainty continues over whether Washington and Tehran will hold direct talks in Qatar.
CNN, citing two US officials, reported that Witkoff was en route to the Qatari capital. It was not immediately clear whether he was travelling with Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser.
President Trump said on Monday that US officials would meet with Iranian representatives in Doha on Tuesday.
A senior US official also told CNN that technical discussions related to the recently announced memorandum of understanding between the two countries remained on schedule despite recent military exchanges.
However, Iran rejected claims that negotiations with the United States were imminent. Tehran’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that no meetings with US officials were planned in the coming days and stressed that its current priority is implementing the memorandum rather than beginning talks on a final agreement.
The conflicting statements highlight continuing uncertainty over diplomatic efforts following the recent ceasefire and broader agreement aimed at reducing tensions in the region.
