Turkish FM to Visit Qatar for Strategic Talks

Hakan Fidan is scheduled to visit Qatar on Tuesday for discussions expected to focus on regional security, the war in Gaza and preparations for the next meeting of the two countries’ High Strategic Committee, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources.

The visit comes as Ankara and Doha continue to deepen political, economic and defense cooperation amid ongoing tensions across the Middle East, including instability linked to the Gaza conflict and maritime security concerns in the Gulf.

Officials said Fidan will review preparations for the 12th session of the High Strategic Committee, which is due to take place in Türkiye later this year under the leadership of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

During the meetings, Fidan is expected to reaffirm Türkiye’s support for Qatar following recent regional tensions and stress the importance of protecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy exports and Gulf trade.

Turkish officials are also expected to emphasize the growing need for regional cooperation in defense, connectivity and diplomatic coordination as instability continues to affect parts of the Middle East.

The Turkish foreign minister is likely to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions in the Gulf while underscoring the importance of resolving regional disputes through dialogue among regional actors.

The Gaza war and the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories are also expected to feature prominently in the talks. Turkish officials have repeatedly criticized Israeli military operations in Gaza and warned against actions they say could further destabilize the region.

Fidan is also expected to stress the importance of preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty amid continued cross-border tensions involving Israel.

Relations between Türkiye and Qatar have strengthened significantly over the past decade, particularly in the fields of trade, defense and investment. The High Strategic Committee has served as the main framework for bilateral coordination since it was established in 2014.

Since the first meeting in 2015, the two countries have signed more than 100 agreements covering sectors including energy, infrastructure, trade and security cooperation.

According to Turkish officials, bilateral trade between the two countries reached around $1.15 billion in 2025. Both sides are seeking to increase that figure to $5 billion in the coming years following the implementation of a trade and economic partnership agreement last August.

The visit is being closely watched across the Gulf as regional governments continue balancing diplomacy, security concerns and economic priorities amid wider geopolitical tensions.

For Gulf states, continued coordination between Ankara and Doha could play a role in broader regional stability efforts, particularly on issues linked to maritime security, energy routes and conflict mediation.
