Saudis Harness Ramadan’s Transformative Power

Ramadan is more than a time of fasting for many Saudis; it is a period of self-discipline, personal growth, and spiritual reflection. During this holy month, Muslims focus on deepening their relationship with God through prayer, reading the Qur’an, and acts of charity. The act of fasting, which includes abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and sexual relations from sunrise to sunset, teaches control over desires and encourages reflection on personal habits.

For many, Ramadan provides a unique opportunity to adopt healthier lifestyles and develop positive habits. Hind Saud, a local from Riyadh, shared how she used the fasting period to improve her health. Last Ramadan, she focused on cutting caffeine, replacing it with healthier drinks like fresh juices and herbal teas. She also worked on reducing her sugar intake by swapping sugary snacks for fruits and yogurt during suhoor.

The change in eating patterns during Ramadan allows Muslims to appreciate food more mindfully. It also brings a greater understanding of the hardships faced by those who lack access to safe food and clean water, making the fasting experience not only a time of self-control but also of empathy for others.

Ramadan is also a time for spiritual growth. Saudis often use this month to renew their connection with God. Amira Abdulmohsen, another local resident, explained that the month helps her spiritually by freeing herself from distractions and focusing on worship. She also emphasized the importance of reducing time spent on social media and instead using it for Qur’an reading or memorization.

Taraweeh prayers, performed every night of Ramadan, play a significant role in the community. These nightly prayers, held at local masjids, strengthen both individual faith and community bonds. Abdulmohsen noted how neighbors come together through iftar gatherings or sharing meals, which fosters a sense of community and mutual responsibility.

The positive changes from Ramadan often continue after the month ends. The self-discipline learned during this period can lead to lasting changes, benefiting both individuals and their communities. The lessons of empathy, health, and spirituality remain long after the final days of fasting.
