Filipino Muslims in UAE Adapt Faith and Work Ahead of Ramadan

As Ramadan preparation begins, Filipino Muslim expatriates in the UAE adjust both work routines and religious practices. Many say balancing faith and daily responsibilities requires careful planning. Consequently, preparation starts weeks in advance to ensure smooth fasting alongside work commitments.

La Solidaridad Bautista, a children’s coordinator in Dubai, explained she gradually changes her sleep and meal schedules before Ramadan begins. “I plan my meals, organize tasks, and rest adequately to stay focused and productive,” she said. Additionally, housing arrangements affect Ramadan preparation. Many workers live in shared accommodations with non-Muslims, requiring open communication about religious practices.

“Mutual respect helps everyone understand my observance,” Bautista added. She also sets personal goals this year to maintain better nutrition and hydration. These steps ensure she remains energized while fasting and performing effectively at work.

Moreover, living abroad has reshaped religious practice for many Muslim OFWs. Distance from family transforms faith observance into a more self-directed effort. Mohammad Gamor, a customer service executive, said, “Back home, we celebrate with the family, but here I must build the experience myself.” He added that being in an Islamic country allows him to focus on intention and worship.

Religious leaders in the UAE emphasize intention, discipline, and self-awareness during Ramadan preparation. John Maquiran, a preacher at the Islamic Information Center, explained, “Fasting is more than food. It involves restraint of the eyes, ears, and speech.” Furthermore, expatriates are encouraged to read the Quran, attend Taraweeh prayers, and join educational sessions.

Seminars and lectures provide resources for new Muslims, especially those without family support. Thus, Ramadan preparation in the UAE blends spiritual discipline with the practical realities of OFW life. Balancing worship, work, and independent living ensures a meaningful and disciplined holy month.
