Doctors in the UAE are observing a surge in patients experiencing stomach discomfort, bloating, and other digestive issues, which they attribute to high levels of stress and anxiety. Medical experts warn that prolonged mental stress can interfere with digestion, trigger acid reflux, and contribute to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Stress Impacting Digestive Health
The fast-paced lifestyle, demanding work environments, and personal responsibilities are being cited as major contributors to stress-related gut problems.
Ahmed Al Khatib, an active individual with a disciplined routine and a mindful approach to diet, struggled with persistent stomach discomfort for over a year. Despite medical tests, dietary adjustments, and prescribed medications, his symptoms, including bloating and cramps, persisted. It was only during a conversation with a psychologist friend that he realized stress was the root cause of his digestive troubles. The pressures of long working hours and family responsibilities had taken a toll on his overall well-being, manifesting through gut-related issues.
“For months, I thought I had food intolerance. I eliminated dairy, gluten, and even coffee, but nothing helped. After speaking with my psychologist friend, I started managing my stress, setting work boundaries, and taking mindful breaks. With time, my symptoms eased. I never realized how closely the gut and mind are connected,” said Al Khatib, a Jordanian expatriate.
Similarly, Arvind K., a 50-year-old professional, experienced severe digestive distress after losing his long-term job six months ago. The uncertainty of his future led to insomnia, loss of appetite, and frequent bouts of indigestion.
“I never imagined that my job worries would manifest as constant stomach pain,” he said. “After several medical tests, doctors reassured me that there was no serious underlying condition. They explained that chronic stress can disrupt gut health, causing bloating, acid reflux, and IBS-like symptoms.”
Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection
Medical specialists emphasize that stress, anxiety, and worry are common triggers of digestive discomfort. While most symptoms are temporary, prolonged stress can lead to chronic gut issues.
Dr. Najeeb Salah Abdulrahman, a specialist gastroenterologist, explained that the gut and brain communicate through the gut-brain axis. When the brain detects stress, it releases stress hormones that can impact gut function, leading to symptoms such as bloating, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea.
“The gut is highly sensitive to emotional and psychological stress, which can disrupt its normal functioning. This trend is particularly noticeable in urban areas, where work pressure and fast-paced lifestyles contribute to chronic stress,” he said.
Recent studies have also linked increased stress levels, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, to a rise in functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), including IBS. Dr. Mahroos Al Rejjal, a specialist in gastroenterology, noted that in nearly 50% of individuals with psychological disorders, gut-related symptoms appear first, often preceding mood disorders.
Holistic Management of Stress-Related Gut Issues
Experts recommend a holistic approach to managing stress-induced gut problems, rather than relying solely on medication.
“Techniques such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness can significantly reduce stress levels. Regular physical activity helps improve gut motility, while a balanced diet rich in fiber, probiotics, and prebiotics supports digestive health,” said Abdulrahman.
Doctors also emphasized the importance of adequate sleep, as poor sleep can worsen both stress and digestive issues. Ensuring seven to eight hours of quality sleep can contribute to overall gut health and well-being.
With stress-related gut disorders on the rise, medical professionals urge individuals to prioritize mental well-being, adopt stress management strategies, and seek medical guidance when necessary.
