Qatar supports international efforts to protect water bodies and marine ecosystems

Qatar supports international efforts to protect water bodies and has reaffirmed its environmental commitments on the global stage. This declaration came from the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, HE Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, during the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France.

Speaking to delegates, the minister stressed that Qatar supports international efforts to conserve water bodies and ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources. He emphasized that oceans and seas are vital for regulating climate, producing food, and maintaining both environmental and economic stability.

Moreover, he warned that global marine ecosystems are facing serious threats. The minister made it clear that these challenges require international efforts, and said urgent and united action must be taken.

Al Subaie reiterated Qatar’s full support for Sustainable Development Goal 14. This global objective focuses on protecting marine life and promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources. He argued that the health of oceans and seas is critical for achieving long-term social and economic growth worldwide.

During his address, the minister outlined Qatar’s major environmental initiatives. For instance, initiatives that showcase how Qatar supports international efforts, such as treating and recycling 100 percent of its wastewater to a third-level standard. This treated water is no longer dumped into the sea but used instead for cooling, irrigation, and industrial purposes.

Additionally, Qatar has launched the Third National Development Strategy (2024), aiming to protect 30 percent of marine areas and restore 30 percent of damaged ecosystems by 2030. The strategy also aims to increase biodiversity and improve marine sustainability.

He also highlighted Qatar’s 2024-2030 Environmental Strategy. This ambitious roadmap includes goals such as safeguarding coastal zones and islands and protecting endangered marine species. According to Al Subaie, over 100 environmental projects are underway to support these objectives.

In conclusion, he reaffirmed that Qatar supports international efforts to fight climate change and develop advanced adaptation strategies. He urged nations to treat oceans as a shared global responsibility.

Indeed, he insisted that protecting water bodies requires global solidarity, innovation, and long-term cooperation.
