Maritime Safety Discussed at IMO Council Session

Qatar took part in the International Maritime Organization’s 138th Council session, highlighting Maritime Safety among the main issues under discussion. The meetings ran from November 2 to 6 at the organization’s headquarters in London. During the five-day session, the Qatar Mission to the IMO represented the country.

Meanwhile, council members examined administrative, organizational and strategic matters concerning the IMO’s operations. In particular, delegates discussed ways to improve the organization’s overall performance and operational efficiency. They also considered challenges affecting important international shipping routes.

Furthermore, protecting vital maritime corridors featured prominently in the discussions. Participants focused on maintaining freedom of navigation while improving safety conditions for seafarers. These concerns also included developments affecting the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

Both waterways play important roles in international maritime transportation and shipping activity. Therefore, protecting navigation and supporting seafarers remain significant priorities for the international maritime community. Accordingly, the council addressed these concerns alongside wider organizational and strategic matters.

Qatar’s participation, meanwhile, reflects its stated commitment to international cooperation through the IMO. The country supports efforts to develop the maritime transportation industry and strengthen navigation security. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of efficient and sustainable global maritime transport.

Through its involvement, Qatar reaffirmed its support for cooperation among IMO member states. Moreover, the country expressed its commitment to initiatives that promote Maritime Safety across international shipping routes. Such cooperation remains important for addressing shared challenges affecting maritime transportation.

At the same time, Qatar highlighted the importance of stability and sustainability throughout the global maritime industry. Its participation formed part of broader international efforts to improve shipping operations and protect seafarers. Consequently, the country said it would continue working with member states toward these objectives.

Overall, the 138th Council session brought administrative priorities and maritime challenges into the same discussions. Its agenda covered organizational efficiency, shipping route protection and the safety of people working at sea. Through its attendance, Qatar reinforced its stated support for international coordination on these matters.
