Qatar is preparing to expand its economic presence in the Kurdistan Region through a series of planned investment projects across key sectors including energy, tourism, infrastructure and healthcare, according to officials from the Qatari Consulate General in Erbil.
The move signals a broader shift in relations between Doha and the Kurdistan Region from traditional diplomatic engagement toward long-term economic partnership and commercial cooperation.
In comments outlining Qatar’s vision for future cooperation, the consulate said the Kurdistan Region’s relative stability, social environment and strategic location continue to attract growing interest from Qatari investors and businesses.
Officials described Erbil as an increasingly important destination for Gulf investment, citing the region’s development potential and improving ties between public institutions and the private sector.
The planned cooperation is expected to focus on a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, education and human resource development, alongside larger infrastructure and energy projects.
Qatari officials also highlighted opportunities in healthcare and tourism, while stressing the importance of building stronger links between companies and government institutions on both sides to support sustainable economic growth.
The diplomatic mission said recent years had seen noticeable progress in bilateral relations through increased visits and coordination between officials and private-sector representatives.
Qatar opened its consulate in Erbil in 2023, a move widely viewed as a sign of growing confidence in the Kurdistan Region’s economic and political position within Iraq and the wider Middle East.
Officials said the next phase of cooperation would focus on translating investment discussions into practical projects capable of supporting development, job creation and long-term economic diversification.
The initiative also reflects broader Gulf interest in expanding economic partnerships within Iraq, particularly in sectors linked to infrastructure, energy security and regional connectivity.
