Doctors in the Sultanate of Oman have made a groundbreaking achievement by successfully performing the first heart transplant from a brain-dead donor. This life-saving procedure was conducted on an Omani patient suffering from heart failure.
The operation, which lasted five hours, was carried out by a multidisciplinary team of Omani medical professionals. Their successful teamwork showcased the advanced capabilities of the country’s healthcare sector.
He emphasized that the heart transplant was done in accordance with the highest medical and ethical standards. The procedure followed national laws. It also adhered to internationally approved recommendations regarding organ donation.
“This achievement is not just the result of a single team’s effort,” the Minister explained. “It reflects a comprehensive national vision, showcasing wise leadership, skilled national capabilities, and the spirit of humanitarian giving. Healthcare workers have proven their readiness to perform with the utmost competence and responsibility.”
Dr. Qassim bin Saleh Al-Abri, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the Royal Hospital, shared his thoughts on the historic achievement. “The success of the first heart transplant, carried out entirely by Omani hands, reflects the tremendous progress our healthcare sector has made. It is the result of years of hard work, meticulous planning, and investment in national talent,” he said.
Dr. Alaa bin Hassan Al Lawati, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at the National Heart Center, also commented on the operation.
“The first heart transplant in Oman was performed smoothly and successfully. It demonstrates the strength of the integrated healthcare system in Oman. It also shows the dedication of all team members who worked tirelessly towards this accomplishment.”
