Oman Police Step Up Security For Dhofar Khareef

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has expanded security and traffic measures across Dhofar Governorate as visitor numbers continue to rise during the 2026 Khareef season.

The enhanced plan includes increased police patrols, security checkpoints and emergency response teams to improve public safety, ease traffic congestion and provide support for residents and tourists throughout the annual monsoon tourism season.

Colonel Salem bin Mohammed Al Kaf, Assistant Commander of Dhofar Governorate Police, said officers have increased their presence on major roads and at key locations to maintain security and respond quickly to incidents. He added that police have strengthened operational readiness to ensure public safety during one of Oman’s busiest travel periods.

Authorities have also established security checkpoints equipped with public security, civil defence, ambulance and air ambulance services. The checkpoints provide guidance to travellers and improve emergency response along routes leading to Dhofar.

At Wadi Harit Police Station, visitors receive road safety advice, particularly on driving in mountainous areas and in conditions of reduced visibility caused by seasonal fog.

The police operations centre remains open around the clock to receive emergency calls, traffic accident reports and requests for assistance, according to Lieutenant Colonel Sulaiman bin Saeed Al Hatali, Director of Operations at the Dhofar Governorate Police Command.

To strengthen security coverage, the Special Tasks Unit has deployed motorcycle patrols capable of reaching beaches, rugged terrain and open areas more quickly. The force is designed to respond rapidly to emergencies and support officers stationed across tourist sites.

The ROP is also using smart traffic management systems to reduce congestion. Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed bin Saeed Ghawas, Assistant Director of Traffic, said motorists can scan a QR code at the Wadi Harit entry point to access alternative routes in the event of road closures, accidents or vehicle breakdowns.

In coordination with Dhofar Municipality, traffic signal timings have also been adjusted at busy intersections in Salalah to improve traffic flow during peak periods.

Police warned that reckless driving, drifting, driving on green spaces, dangerous overtaking and riding through vehicle windows or sunroofs are serious traffic offences that will be dealt with under Omani law.

Along the coastline, Coast Guard teams have increased patrols using jet skis and dune buggies to improve beach safety. Authorities have urged visitors to exercise caution due to rough seas, strong currents and high waves, warning of the risks of drowning and falls from cliffs.

Mounted police units are also patrolling tourist areas that are difficult to access by vehicle, while officers continue to assist visitors and respond to reports, including cases involving missing children at public events.

The Royal Oman Police has urged motorists to follow traffic regulations, avoid speeding, take regular breaks during long journeys and comply with police instructions to help ensure a safe and enjoyable Khareef season for all.
