Oman Issues Maritime Safety Warning

Oman’s Maritime Security Centre has issued a warning to vessels operating near one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors after the detection of a suspected floating mine in waters west of the Inshore Traffic Zone.

The centre said the object was observed in the maritime area of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil and commercial shipping, and urged all seafarers, fishermen, and commercial vessels to exercise heightened caution.

In its advisory posted on social media platform X, the authority called on maritime users to maintain a safe distance from any unidentified objects at sea and to immediately report them to relevant security agencies.

The warning did not provide further details on the origin or condition of the object, but stressed the importance of vigilance given the strategic sensitivity of the region. The suspected floating mine prompted renewed safety reminders for vessels transiting the area.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint linking the Gulf with the Arabian Sea, through which a significant portion of global energy shipments pass. Maritime authorities in the region regularly issue alerts to ensure navigational safety amid varying security and environmental risks.
