Omani football fans have begun travelling to the United States, Canada and Mexico as the FIFA World Cup 2026 gets underway, joining supporters from around the world for the sport’s biggest tournament.
With tickets secured and travel plans in place, many fans are attending matches in person for a chance to experience the atmosphere firsthand. For some, it is a return to World Cup memories, while for others it marks their first time witnessing the global event live.
Among those travelling is Muscat resident M Singh, who is currently in Canada and plans to attend multiple matches during the tournament. The excitement has also been echoed by former Oman captain Ali Al Habsi, who encouraged fans ahead of the opening fixtures.
Inside Oman, World Cup fever is also visible. In the mountain village of Bilad Sayt, organisers have set up a public viewing area with a large screen, combining live match broadcasts with cultural and entertainment activities aimed at attracting visitors and supporting local tourism.
Cinemas across the country are also screening matches, offering fans an alternative way to follow the tournament.
The 2026 World Cup is the first edition hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico. It features 48 teams and a record 104 matches, with eight Arab nations taking part in the competition.
