The UAE’s media sector growth reached new heights in the first half of 2025, with 2,562 media licenses and permits issued. The UAE Media Council released these figures in its mid-year performance review, showcasing the nation’s expanding influence in the global creative industry.
Out of the total, 2,152 were general media licenses. Additionally, 235 digital media licenses supported content creators on social platforms. Furthermore, the Council approved 103 filming permits and granted 72 licenses for newspapers and magazines.
In publishing, the UAE Media Council processed over 514,000 book titles and issued 35,000 circulation permits. However, it blocked 32 titles from entering UAE markets due to violations of national values or legal standards.
Cinema also played a significant role in the UAE’s media sector growth. The Council approved 611 film releases, with over 6 million tickets sold. This resulted in AED 309 million in box office revenue during the six-month period. Moreover, it cleared 131 video games for circulation, reflecting a growing digital entertainment market.
Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the UAE Media Council, emphasized the importance of maintaining global partnerships. He affirmed the nation’s ambition to become a major media hub. The Council continues to promote progressive policies and agile regulations that support the creative economy and align with national GDP goals.
During its second board meeting of 2025, the Council reviewed major projects and initiatives focused on improving the media business environment. Discussions addressed regulatory modernization and measures to attract both investors and creatives.
One standout initiative includes the development of an AI-powered digital platform. Built in partnership with Presight, this platform will enhance licensing, content oversight, and data analysis capabilities across the sector.
The board meeting brought together top government media leaders from across the Emirates. Members included Sheikh Abdullah bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Maryam Eid Al Mheiri, and Saeed Mohammed Al Eter, among others.
As the UAE media sector growth continues, officials aim to balance rapid expansion with responsible governance. The country’s strategic push ensures that innovation, regulation, and cultural integrity move forward in tandem.
