Kuwait was represented at one of Europe’s largest medical gatherings this week as a Kuwaiti gastroenterologist performed live endoscopic procedures before an international audience in Italy.
Dr Asma Al-Kandari, a consultant in gastroenterology and endoscopy at Jahra Hospital, took part in the ESGE Days conference held in Milan from May 14 to 16, according to Kuwait’s Ministry of Health. She was the only participant from the Middle East selected for the conference’s live clinical demonstrations alongside specialists from 13 countries.
During the event, Al-Kandari carried out two advanced procedures using endoscopic techniques, including the removal of an appendix tumor through colonoscopy and the treatment of a tumor in the transverse colon.
The ministry said the participation reflected Kuwait’s presence in high-level international medical forums focused on digestive diseases and minimally invasive treatment methods. The conference brought together experts in endoscopy, oncology, surgery and pathology from across several regions.

In addition to the live procedures, Al-Kandari participated in a multidisciplinary scientific session examining complex digestive disease cases. According to the ministry, the discussions focused on improving clinical decision-making through cooperation between specialists from different medical fields.
She also presented research exploring the use of artificial intelligence in evaluating the depth of gastrointestinal tumors through AI-supported endoscopic imaging. The study aims to support more accurate diagnoses and treatment planning.
The ministry added that Al-Kandari is involved in developing clinical guidelines within the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, reflecting growing Gulf participation in international healthcare research and policy discussions.
Kuwaiti doctor achieves milestone with live surgeries at EU conference at a time when countries across the Gulf are expanding investment in medical innovation, digital health tools and specialist training programs as part of broader healthcare modernization plans.
