A prominent Kuwaiti advocate is calling for the integration of sign language into all stages of education. She is promoting it as a second language. The event was held under the slogan “The Deaf’s Voice… and Kuwait’s Vision 2035.” It focused on advancing educational and social opportunities for the hearing-impaired community. She highlighted the importance of removing restrictions at Kuwait University and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET). Her statements underscored her belief in equal opportunities for all members of society. “We are committed to supporting this vital group, who possess full legal capacity just like the rest of us,” Al-Jouan said. She emphasized that hearing-impaired individuals form a crucial part of Kuwaiti society’s fabric. The forum, organized by the Women’s Institute for Development and Peace at the Arab Center for Educational Research for the Gulf States, addressed four main themes: education, legal rights, health, and social integration. The Ministry’s “steady and determined progress” in development projects that promote the inclusion of hearing-impaired individuals in society. Al-Tabtabaei reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to meeting its international obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). His comments reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility and equal opportunities for all citizens.
The forum concluded with a renewed commitment to enhancing the quality of life for hearing-impaired individuals in Kuwait. Advocates, educators, and policymakers agreed that integrating sign language into the educational system would mark a significant step. They saw it as crucial for achieving this goal.
