A leading Sudanese political coalition has urged Saudi Arabia to ensure the Jeddah Declaration remains central to any new peace efforts. The Forces for Freedom and Change Democratic Bloc (FFC-DB) delivered this message during a meeting with Saudi Ambassador Ali Hassan bin Jaafar.
The declaration, signed in May 2023, was designed to protect civilians and facilitate aid access. However, neither Sudan’s army nor the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fully implemented it. Now, as the U.S. prepares to host multinational talks, the FFC-DB insists the agreement must guide future negotiations.
Mohamed Zakaria, an FFC-DB spokesman, emphasized the declaration’s alignment with international humanitarian law. He stated that any security agreement should build upon its principles. The bloc’s leaders, including prominent figure Minni Arko Minawi, also presented a roadmap for a lasting political solution.
Additionally, the delegation praised Saudi Arabia’s mediation efforts and humanitarian support. The kingdom, alongside the U.S., originally brokered the Jeddah Declaration shortly after the war erupted in April 2023. Despite initial hopes, fighting continued, worsening Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, Washington is set to convene key stakeholders, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Qatar, and Britain. These talks aim to explore viable solutions to the conflict. The FFC-DB’s stance reinforces the need for a legally grounded framework to ensure civilian protection.
As discussions progress, international pressure mounts for warring parties to commit to a ceasefire. The Jeddah Declaration remains a critical reference point, offering a tested foundation for renewed peace efforts.
