Iraq Strengthens Diplomatic Ties with Moscow After 19 Years

Iraq has reappointed its ambassador to Moscow, signaling renewed focus on improving relations with Russia. This comes almost 19 years after the previous ambassador served.

Abdul Karim Hashem Mustafa will present his credentials to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Thursday. This step strengthens Iraq’s communication and cooperation with Moscow.

Mustafa has decades of experience in diplomacy. He previously served as Iraq’s ambassador to Morocco and China. Since February 2021, he represented Iraq at the United Nations and other organizations in Geneva. He also worked as senior undersecretary at Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as an adviser to the Iraqi prime minister on diplomacy.

His academic background supports his diplomatic expertise. Iraq reappoints ambassador to Moscow Abdul Karim Hashem Mustafa, who holds a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Grenoble, earned in 1987, and a master’s degree from the same university obtained in 1984. He speaks Arabic, French, and English fluently.

This appointment shows Iraq’s focus on maintaining strong international ties. Returning an experienced diplomat ensures continuity and strengthens the country’s global engagement.

The reappointment also opens opportunities for economic, political, and cultural cooperation with Russia. Iraq aims to expand trade agreements, joint projects, and collaborations with Moscow.

Analysts note that Iraq’s decision demonstrates a commitment to stable diplomacy. Sending a seasoned ambassador back to Russia signals Baghdad’s intention to engage actively in international affairs.

Overall, Iraq positions itself as a constructive partner in the region. The new ambassador will support long-term diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations with Moscow.
