Iraq Launches Strategic Development Road to Boost Trade and Logistics

Iraq’s Development Road project highlights the nation’s commitment to infrastructure growth and economic expansion. This focus on infrastructure growth aims to improve transport, attract investment, and strengthen Iraq’s position as a regional trade hub. Moreover, infrastructure growth is central to Iraq’s long-term strategy for national and international connectivity.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated the first phase of the project in Basra on Thursday. This initial section covers 62 kilometers, connecting the al-Faw Grand Port with Umm Qasr. It includes three lanes for heavy trucks and safety walls to ensure secure transit. Furthermore, the finished portion stretches 51 kilometers from the al-Faw Grand Port to the underwater tunnel, with an additional 11 kilometers linking to the main road toward Safwan near Kuwait.

The development features two main bridges, measuring 805 meters and 300 meters, equipped with solar-powered lights. These enhancements reflect Iraq’s dedication to sustainable energy and modern technology integration. Additionally, the project includes a railway for commodities transport, with first-phase capacity at 3.5 million tons and a second-phase expansion reaching 7.5 million tons. Pipelines for energy transport are also part of the plan.

Spanning $17 billion, the Development Road will ultimately connect Basra to the Turkish border. By linking southern Iraq to Europe overland, the project could rival Egypt’s Suez Canal in strategic significance. Moreover, the road and rail corridor is expected to facilitate international trade, enhance logistics efficiency, and create thousands of jobs for Iraq and neighboring countries.

Officials stress that this initiative will open numerous investment opportunities in transportation, construction, and energy sectors. It will also improve supply chains, accelerate regional commerce, and strengthen Iraq’s global trade profile.

Through this strategic project, Iraq demonstrates its vision for economic diversification and long-term infrastructure development. By prioritizing infrastructure growth, the country is laying a strong foundation for trade, investment, and sustainable logistics networks.

Overall, the Development Road project marks a transformative step for Iraq. With modern transport systems, energy pipelines, and international connectivity, the nation moves closer to becoming a key trade and logistics hub.
