Iraq Launches Historic 24,000-Megawatt Power Project with GE Vernova

Iraq has officially begun Iraq’s mega power project in cooperation with General Electric Vernova. This initiative aims to meet the country’s rising electricity needs and modernize energy infrastructure.

The announcement came from Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, during a workshop titled “Ways to Meet the Demand for Electricity in Iraq.” Officials highlighted the importance of Iraq’s mega power project in ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply nationwide.

The project follows a memorandum of understanding signed last April between GE Vernova and Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity. The MoU focuses on combined-cycle gas-fired power plants, marking the largest electricity agreement in Iraq’s history.

Funding for the project may involve foreign financial institutions, strengthening Iraq’s commitment to energy modernization. The agreement covers both new constructions and upgrades to existing facilities to boost efficiency.

GE Vernova plans to execute the project in three stages over the next four years. These stages include modernizing current generating units, applying advanced technology, and increasing output without extra fuel use.

The initiative complements a separate deal with Siemens, which will provide an additional 14,000 megawatts of capacity. Together, these projects form a critical part of Iraq’s mega power project, ensuring electricity supply keeps pace with growing demand.

Experts emphasize that the project will create jobs, enhance technical skills, and support industrial growth. Government officials expect that expanding electricity capacity will improve living standards and drive economic development.

As construction progresses, phased completion will bring early improvements in energy efficiency. The project demonstrates Iraq’s commitment to sustainable and modern electricity production.
