Iraq is set to begin Mosul-Saudi flights, allowing pilgrims to travel directly from Mosul to Saudi Arabia. Airport officials said these flights will provide smoother access to holy sites for Umrah and Hajj travelers. The launch marks a significant milestone in Iraq’s efforts to restore Mosul International Airport and strengthen its international connectivity.
Director of Mosul International Airport, Ammar al-Bayati, stated that the airport completed technical and administrative preparations. Authorities coordinated with relevant bodies to ensure a safe and efficient flow of flights. These preparations guarantee that passengers can travel comfortably while maintaining high safety standards.
The introduction of Mosul-Saudi flights represents a major step in reviving Mosul International Airport. Once destroyed by ISIS, the airport has undergone extensive reconstruction to become Iraq’s third most important aviation hub after Baghdad and Basra. The reopening improves both domestic and international travel options for northern Iraq residents.
In late October, the Iraqi government authorized officials to resume domestic flights at Mosul International Airport starting November 1. Negotiations with foreign firms were underway to prepare the airport for international operations. These efforts included upgrading runways, improving facilities, and ensuring the airport meets global aviation standards.
The airport initially reopened in mid-July after a successful trial run in early June. The restoration of Mosul International Airport strengthens Iraq’s aviation network and reconnects Mosul with other regions and international destinations. This project also supports Iraq’s economy by boosting tourism and pilgrimage travel.
Originally built in 1990 as a civil airport, Mosul International Airport became a strategic military site after ISIS captured it in June 2014. Iraqi forces regained control in February 2017, and the airport has since been rebuilt to accommodate both civilian and international flights.
Officials said the Mosul-Saudi flights will operate regularly, with schedules accommodating the peak pilgrimage seasons. Travelers can expect efficient boarding procedures and direct routes to Saudi Arabia, eliminating previous travel challenges. Authorities continue to monitor operations to ensure passenger satisfaction and safety.
Overall, the introduction of Mosul-Saudi flights highlights Iraq’s commitment to modernizing its aviation sector. The airport now plays a central role in connecting northern Iraq to the wider world while facilitating spiritual journeys for thousands of pilgrims annually.
