Iraq Investigates AI Video Deemed Disrespectful to National Figures

Iraq is investigating an AI video controversy showing leaders alongside prominent historical figures recently. The footage depicts caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani with the late poet Mohammed Mahdi Al-Jawahiri. The release coincided with the beginning of Ramadan, drawing immediate public attention and criticism nationwide.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani condemned the AI video controversy, emphasizing that the content disrespects Iraq’s national symbols. His media office stated the footage is incompatible with his deep respect for Al-Jawahiri’s legacy. Authorities urged the Communications and Media Commission to investigate the video’s creation and distribution thoroughly.

The video also depicts former Prime Minister Nouri Al-Said serving tea alongside current Parliamentary Speaker Mohammed Al-Halbousi. Al-Said’s historical role in Iraq’s monarchy-era politics remains controversial due to his Western alliances. Meanwhile, Al-Halbousi leads the Taqaddum Party, reflecting contemporary political influence in Baghdad and parliamentary affairs.

Officials confirmed the Prime Minister retains full legal authority to pursue those responsible for producing the AI video controversy. Legal measures could include fines, content removal, and potential criminal investigation under Iraq’s communications regulations. The case highlights increasing concern about AI-generated content impacting national dignity and historical accuracy.

Mohammed Mahdi Al-Jawahiri is celebrated as one of Iraq’s greatest poets, renowned for his patriotic and justice-oriented verses. His work symbolizes Iraq’s literary and cultural identity, making unauthorized portrayals highly sensitive. Public commentators criticized the AI video controversy for trivializing revered historical figures and merging unrelated timelines for digital effect.

Al-Sudani emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting national symbols from manipulation in digital media and AI-generated content. The Prime Minister warned that future misuse of artificial intelligence to produce disrespectful material will face strict legal consequences. Authorities also encouraged social media platforms to cooperate with investigations and remove harmful content promptly.

The incident reflects a broader global concern about AI-generated media and its potential for misrepresentation or defamation. Experts note that AI video controversy cases can damage reputations, inflame political tensions, and mislead citizens. Iraq’s proactive investigation sets a precedent for monitoring and regulating AI technologies responsibly.

As the inquiry continues, authorities plan to evaluate both the technological origin of the AI video controversy and its social impact. The government aims to ensure accountability while fostering public awareness about responsible digital content creation in Iraq.
