Iqbal Makes History At World Cup For Pakistan Origin

Iraqi midfielder Zaidan Iqbal has made history at the 2026 World Cup after becoming the first player of Pakistani origin to feature in the tournament.

The 23-year-old came on as a substitute in Iraq’s 4–1 defeat to Norway in their group stage match on Wednesday, where Erling Haaland scored twice and played a decisive role in the victory.

Despite the result, Iqbal’s appearance marked a milestone moment, with reports describing it as a significant achievement for Pakistani football supporters around the world.

Born and raised in Manchester, Iqbal is eligible to represent Iraq through his mother and Pakistan through his father. He ultimately chose to play for Iraq at international level.

Speaking previously, he said he takes pride in both sides of his heritage, noting his strong emotional connection to Iraq and Pakistan, as well as his upbringing in England.

The midfielder has also spoken about carrying both identities with him on the pitch, including sporting boots that feature symbols representing both countries.

His World Cup debut adds a historic chapter to his career and highlights the growing diversity of players competing at international level.
