HMC Observes World Glaucoma Week, Emphasizing Quality Eye Care

Doha – Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is marking World Glaucoma Week by raising awareness about the risks of glaucoma and highlighting its advanced treatment services. As Qatar’s leading healthcare provider, HMC remains committed to early detection and high-quality care to help prevent vision loss.

Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease that can cause irreversible blindness if left untreated. It occurs when increased pressure in the eye damages the optic nerve. Often called the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma can develop without noticeable symptoms, making early detection critical.

Dr. Zakia Al Ansari, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of HMC’s Glaucoma Unit, stressed the importance of regular eye exams. “Glaucoma can go unnoticed in its early stages. Routine check-ups are essential for early diagnosis and preventing permanent vision loss,” she said.

HMC provides world-class glaucoma care, treating more than 500 patients monthly. The hospital’s specialized glaucoma clinics use cutting-edge technology and a multidisciplinary approach to offer personalized treatment plans. These include prescription eye drops, advanced laser procedures, and surgical interventions designed to control eye pressure and prevent further damage.

Individuals at higher risk—including those over 40, people with a family history of glaucoma, diabetics, and individuals with severe nearsightedness—are encouraged to undergo screening as early as 35. HMC recommends regular comprehensive eye exams every one to three years, depending on individual risk levels.

Glaucoma treatment at HMC typically begins with prescription eye drops to reduce intraocular pressure. If necessary, patients may receive additional treatments such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, laser therapy, or surgery.

By raising awareness and offering state-of-the-art treatment, HMC continues to lead efforts in glaucoma care, ensuring better eye health for Qatar’s residents.
