Doha – Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Hamad Trauma Center has been officially designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center on Trauma. This prestigious recognition places the center among HMC’s other WHO Collaborating Centers, including those for Treating Tobacco Dependence and Healthy Ageing and Dementia.
Since its establishment in 2007 at Hamad General Hospital, the Hamad Trauma Center has evolved into a key institution in Qatar’s national trauma system. It holds Level 1 Trauma Center status, as classified by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. Additionally, since 2014, HMC’s Trauma System has maintained Trauma Distinction accreditation from Accreditation Canada International. This is a globally recognized trauma accrediting body.
A Milestone in Trauma Care
HMC’s Managing Director, HE Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Suwaidi, highlighted the importance of this recognition, stating, “This designation is a testament to HMC’s excellence in trauma care. It underscores our commitment to advancing research, education, and clinical excellence, both in Qatar and globally. Through this collaboration, we will continue to drive innovation, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to the global development of trauma care.”
The newly designated WHO Collaborating Center on Trauma at HMC will focus on several key initiatives:
- Supporting WHO in evaluating and strengthening trauma referral pathways.
- Assisting in the development and dissemination of training programs, educational tools, and trauma management standards.
- Contributing to WHO’s efforts to establish a global trauma care network.
Strengthening Regional Trauma Leadership
Dr. Hassan Al Thani, Head of Trauma and Vascular Services at HMC, emphasized the impact of this achievement, stating, “This designation strengthens our leadership in trauma care across the Eastern Mediterranean Region. It will help us foster education and enhance quality improvement. Moreover, it will promote multi-institutional collaboration in areas such as trauma credentialing, injury surveillance, clinical research, and training.”
With over 800 WHO Collaborating Centers worldwide, these institutions play a critical role in advancing healthcare fields such as trauma care, nursing, mental health, and chronic diseases. The inclusion of Hamad Trauma Center in this global network marks a significant step in Qatar’s contribution to the advancement of trauma care and patient safety on an international scale.
