Global Warming will soon exceed the 1.5°C threshold established under the 2015 Paris climate agreement. A new United Nations report outlines strategies to limit further increases and eventually reduce temperatures.
The report acknowledges that countries will likely cross the internationally recognized temperature threshold within several years. However, scientists and UN officials say governments can still reduce the severity of future climate impacts.
Under the Paris Agreement, countries adopted 1.5°C above pre-industrial temperatures as a crucial climate goal. Scientists identified significantly greater risks when temperatures approach or exceed two degrees Celsius.
Current global temperatures have already reached approximately 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels, according to scientific estimates. However, experts measure the Paris threshold using longer-term averages rather than individual years.
Consequently, the latest assessment changes the focus from preventing an overshoot to managing its consequences. The UN now urges governments to limit peak warming before gradually bringing temperatures below the agreed threshold.
The report describes this temporary period above 1.5°C as an “overshoot” scenario. Under the most ambitious pathway, global temperatures could peak around 1.8°C before gradually declining later this century.
However, current government policies could produce considerably higher warming by 2100, reaching approximately 2.6°C. Therefore, scientists emphasize that immediate emissions reductions remain essential to limiting future damage.
Every delay in reducing greenhouse gas emissions could increase the eventual peak temperature, according to the report. Scientists warn that governments therefore need faster action to prevent a larger and longer overshoot.
Moreover, experts stress that every fraction of a degree remains important, even after temperatures exceed 1.5°C. Avoiding additional warming can reduce the intensity of extreme weather, ecosystem damage, and other climate-related impacts.
The expected overshoot could continue for several decades, creating prolonged challenges for communities around the world. During that period, governments will need stronger adaptation measures alongside efforts to reduce emissions.
The report warns that worsening temperatures could increase deaths, illness, food insecurity, and water shortages. In addition, economic losses could grow while ecosystems face increasing pressure from extreme environmental conditions.
Poorer communities face particularly serious risks because they often have fewer resources for climate adaptation. Therefore, the UN says governments should strengthen support for vulnerable populations as conditions become more difficult.
Scientists also warn about potential climate tipping points that could trigger irreversible and cascading environmental changes. These risks include major ice-sheet losses, Amazon rainforest degradation, and disruption of Atlantic Ocean circulation.
Such developments could affect sea levels, ecosystems, weather patterns, and living conditions across different regions. Consequently, some locations could eventually face serious challenges maintaining insurance coverage or remaining suitable for habitation.
At the same time, governments will need to explore methods for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Tree planting can contribute to carbon removal, but scientists say it cannot provide enough cooling alone.
The report therefore calls for additional carbon removal technologies capable of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, experts caution that many emerging approaches remain expensive, technically challenging, or difficult to deploy at scale.
Reducing fossil fuel consumption remains the most important step toward controlling future temperature increases. Governments must therefore accelerate the transition away from coal, oil, and gas while expanding cleaner energy systems.
The UN assessment also emphasizes that climate action cannot stop once emissions decline. Instead, countries must prepare communities for unavoidable impacts while continuing efforts to restore safer temperature levels.
Global Warming therefore represents both an immediate environmental challenge and a long-term policy test. Governments now face the task of limiting peak temperatures while preparing communities for worsening climate impacts.
Ultimately, the report argues that exceeding 1.5°C does not mean climate action has failed. Instead, faster emissions reductions can still limit damage and shorten the period of excessive warming.
