Bahrain Upgrades National ID for Seamless Travel

Bahrain has made a significant advancement in digital innovation by upgrading its national ID card. The Kingdom has integrated Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology into the ID, transforming it into a secure and travel-ready document. This upgrade makes Bahrain the first country in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to implement such a feature.

The upgraded ID card now includes a “travel application-ready chip” designed to simplify cross-border travel. Recently, the Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA) showcased this new feature during a press conference. The chip allows the ID card to serve as a digital travel credential, fully aligned with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

Along with the travel application-ready chip, the enhanced ID also boasts improved biometrics, increased storage capacity, and additional security features. These upgrades aim to provide Bahrain’s citizens with a smoother and more secure travel experience.

The government has informed citizens that they can continue using their current IDs until they expire. Once expired, they can obtain the upgraded version of the national ID card. This transition is part of Bahrain’s broader initiative to modernize public services through digital transformation.

This upgraded national ID is just one part of Bahrain’s digital innovation efforts led by the Ministry of Interior. Recently, the Ministry launched other important projects, including a digital government service center, a digital laboratory for innovation, and AI technology adoption. These projects reflect Bahrain’s ambition to become a regional leader in digital transformation.

Additionally, Bahrain’s government is working to ensure that the new national ID is accepted internationally as a travel document. The aim is to enable Bahrain’s citizens to use the upgraded ID for seamless travel across borders.

In conclusion, the upgraded national ID card is a significant milestone in Bahrain’s digital transformation journey. With features like the travel application-ready chip and enhanced security, the country is paving the way for a more modern and efficient public service system.
