Bahrain Theatre Leader Receives British Empire Medal

Bahrain-based theatre figure Hannah Turner has officially received the British Empire Medal, recognising her long-standing contribution to community service and the performing arts in the kingdom.

The award was presented during a ceremony hosted by the British Embassy in Manama, where British Ambassador Alastair Long honoured Turner following her inclusion in King Charles III’s Birthday Honours List 2025.

Turner, chairperson of the Manama Theatre Club, was recognised under the Diplomatic Service category of the British Empire Medal, which honours individuals who have demonstrated sustained and practical service to their communities.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Long praised Turner’s impact on Bahrain’s cultural landscape, highlighting her decades of involvement in theatre productions, mentoring and charitable initiatives.

He said her contribution extended beyond the stage, noting the positive influence she has had on generations of performers and community members.

Turner, an Anglo-Irish expatriate who has lived in Bahrain for nearly 20 years, joined the Manama Theatre Club in 2010 and later became its chairperson. Under her leadership, the organisation has staged a wide range of productions, including classic plays, comedies and pantomimes.

Responding to the recognition, Turner said the award reflected the efforts of the wider theatre community rather than one individual.

She described community theatre as a collective experience that creates lasting connections and opportunities for personal growth, adding that she accepted the honour on behalf of everyone who had contributed to the club over the years.

Beyond theatre, Turner has been involved in a number of charitable initiatives in Bahrain. Her community work has included fundraising campaigns supporting displaced families and projects recognising healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Founded in 1979, the Manama Theatre Club has become one of Bahrain’s longest-running amateur theatre organisations, producing more than 100 shows and contributing significantly to the kingdom’s cultural scene.

Turner said she plans to continue her work with the club, including preparations for future productions later this year.
