Stronger Erbil-Baghdad Ties: A Step Toward National Unity

Iraqi leaders focused on building stronger Erbil-Baghdad ties through open discussion and mutual respect. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani met on the forum’s sidelines to discuss Iraq’s political situation, constitutional issues, and regional developments.

President Barzani stressed the need to protect the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region. He reaffirmed Erbil’s commitment to working closely with Baghdad. According to him, stronger Erbil-Baghdad ties are essential for national unity and long-term stability.

Prime Minister Sudani shared a similar message. He emphasized continued coordination between federal and regional authorities to protect Iraq’s security. Both leaders agreed to keep Iraq away from external conflicts and instead support peaceful solutions in the region.

Earlier, both officials addressed the forum’s main session. President Barzani called for the swift implementation of Article 140 of Iraq’s constitution. That article outlines steps to resolve disputes over territories like Kirkuk. He also urged the reactivation of the committee responsible for its enforcement.

Prime Minister Sudani praised the current tone of dialogue between Baghdad and Erbil. He said the relationship had shifted from political tensions to practical cooperation. This, he noted, marks a positive change.

As the forum closed, leaders agreed that Iraq’s progress depends on stronger Erbil-Baghdad ties. With commitment, trust, and action, both sides can shape a better future for all Iraqis. They also made clear that stronger Erbil-Baghdad ties must remain a top priority moving forward.
